Support Our Research
Pioneering research that advances the discovery of new medicines
Research is expensive. Although the William Harvey Research Institute successfully raises funds from government and major biomedical research charities for defined projects, the ability of the Foundation to provide seed funding remains a crucial catalyst that enables the Institute's talented researchers to start new lines of truly innovative work.
PhD studentships and research fellowships
PhD studentships are the entry point into research for graduates, followed by post-doctoral research fellowships. These are critical to ensure that today's successful academics are replaced with new talent in the future. Each three-year PhD studentship costs around £100,000 and each post-doctoral research fellowship around £150,000. The Foundation wishes to fund at least one new studentship or fellowship each year.
The Foundation seeks to provide up to £250,000 a year in grants to support specific research projects. The priority is to provide seed funding to investigate novel ideas and methods, which in turn might lead to larger projects that can be supported by the major grant-making bodies. The Foundation's support is in the form of individual grants worth usually between £20,000 and £50,000.
The John Vane Chair
It is now 10 years since Sir John died, and the Institute is committed to recruiting a world-leading scientist to a professorial Chair named in his memory and to continue the cycle of innovation and translation. The Foundation wishes to make a major contribution to this aim.
The Foundation welcomes donations of any size
With our commitment to providing seed funding to encourage and enable the truly innovative and our focus on supporting research into cardiovascular and inflammatory diseases, all donations make an impact.
We recognise that many donors like to remain anonymous. However, the Foundation is happy to associate a donor's name with the William Harvey Research Institute in recognition of significant gifts where this accords with the wishes of the donor. Some examples of these are:
- A named professorial Chair for gifts of £1m or more
- A named laboratory for gifts of £500k or more
- A named seminar room for gifts of £250k or more
- A named research fund for gifts of £200k or more
- A named research fellowship for gifts of £150k or more
- A named PhD studentship for gifts of £100k or more
A legacy is a wonderful gift to fight disease in the future. Please contact us to discuss your specific preferences or other arrangements that you would like to provide lasting recognition of your support.
The Foundation is committed to raising funds for the strict purpose of supporting these essential research activities. The Foundation has a trading subsidiary, William Harvey Research Limited, offering contract research, consultancy and scientific-conference services. The profit from these activities is gift-aided to the Foundation to support its administrative costs and any surplus is awarded in research grants. Your donated funds therefore will be used entirely to support research.
If it is donated for a specific purpose, it will be restricted to that use. We aim to make supporting us as straightforward as possible. So this website attempts to provide a clear idea of what we support and our priorities. But if you need any further information, please don't hesitate to contact us.
Please ensure tax effectiveness of your donation
There are ways we can increase the value - and hence the effect - of your support. If you are a UK taxpayer then it is important that you Gift Aid your donation to maximise its value. If you are treated as resident in the USA for tax purposes, WHRF can make arrangements for your support to be made in a tax effective way. Please contact us if this applies to you.
Your support is much appreciated
